upset by Mt Vernon
MT. VERNON, TX- The Mt. Vernon Tigers upset the
Atlanta Rabbit’s 35-28 in the final game of the season for
both teams which resulted in a two-way tie for last place in
district 16-3A.
The Rabbit’s jumped out to a 7-0 lead with 8:55 remaining
in the first quarter when running back Demon Haire scored on a 4-yard
run. The touchdown came one play after the Rabbits gained 56 yards on
the hook and ladder. On the play, Ibarra completed a pass to Blake
Cruson who flipped the ball back to Demarcus Jones who carried to the
four of the Tigers.
The Rabbits increased their lead to 14-0 with 3:48
remaining in the first quarter when quarterback Carlos Ibarra scored on
a quarterback sneak as the Rabbit’s signal caller rode on the coat tail
of center Ethan Puckett.
The Rabbit’s lead didn’t last long; the Mt. Vernon Tigers
scored on a Christian Butler 7-yard touchdown pass to Taylor Mays.
However Mt. Vernon couldn’t kick the extra point and the score was 14-6.
With 11:29 remaining in the first half, Mt. Vernon (5-5,
1-4) cut the Atlanta lead to 14-12 with a 25 yard touchdown pass from
Butler to Frank Hall. However, the Tigers 2-point conversion attempt was
no good.
The Rabbit’s (2-8, 1-4) upped their lead to 21-18 when
Ibarra connected with Jones on a 15-yard touchdown pass.
The Tigers stole some momentum by kicking a 23-yard field
goal with 1:11 left in the half. The field goal mad the score 21-21.
However, Atlanta would score one more time before the
half when Ibarra found Linwood open on a 34-yard touchdown pass giving
the Rabbit’s a 28-21 lead.
Linwood’s touchdown would end up being the Rabbit’s last
points of the year as the Tigers scored the last two touchdowns and the
only two scores in the second half, both touchdown passes from Butler to
Hall for 61 and 7 yards.
The win dropped both teams to 1-4 in district in a tie
for last place.
“Despite all the injury’s and distractions during the
week we still stayed in the game and it was a tremendous effort,” Ronnie
Melton, Atlanta Rabbit’s head coach said. “We made big plays like we did
all year and big plays kept us in games all year.”
The Rabbit’s open up the 2009 season in September next
year and until then Rabbit’s fans will have to wait another year to have
a chance to win another state championship like they did in 2003.
