Cass
County Girl gives thanks. Emily Heldt, 9 years old, has been in the
prayers of those all over Cass County after she recieved head injuries
by a horse on May 25th. She has gone to being in a coma, to learning
to walk, to learning how to do basic things all over again. Each day
brings new struggles, however Emily has shown that she is very
determined. In an exlusive interview, this is what Emily wanted to
tell the great folks of Cass County, "Hi, this is Emily. I love you!
Thank you for your prayers." In a letter Cathy Heldt wrote, more
appreciation is given and prayers are continued to be requested as
each day still brings new battles and trials to Emily's full recovery.
But, through God's grace, Emily Heldt has made it clear that she is
determined.
The Following is a thank you letter from the Heldt family:
Two months ago, our
precious daughter Emily suffered a severe injury on our farm while
feeding our horses. What we didn’t know or could have known was how
drastically our lives would change from that moment on. Since that
time, Emily has been on what seems like a proverbial roller coaster,
as each day brings new challenges. God has spared our child and for
that we give Him all the glory. Keith and I want YOU to know, YOU who
have been vigilant in prayer, YOU who have sacrificed so much so that
we could be there with Emily, YOU who have loved us so much, even
though you may not even know us, we want YOU to know how grateful we
are and we will never forget what has been done on Emily’s behalf. We
have been bathed in prayer since day one and we know absolutely that
God has answered those prayers as we get to hold our child each and
every day. We have been completely overwhelmed as well by the monetary
support given through donations and fund raisers which, for us, has
allowed us to spend these months with our daughter. You will never
know how thankful we are to live in a community filled with such
loving people as you. Our promise to you is that we will do our best
to honor what God has given us each and every day and never to take
life for granted. So it is with love filled hearts that Keith and I
send this letter out to those who have touched our lives in such a
drastic way, we love you and thank you so very much. May God bless you
and your families and know that we will never forget what you have
done for us. Cathy, Keith and Emily Heldt

is well maintained is another thing that you can always do.” You can

ATLANTA– Patty Hanson has been awarded the 2010 Adopt-a-Highway
Volunteer Award for her efforts and dedication to the program. In
2005, Hanson adopted a stretch a roadway in Cass County and started
picking up litter. She takes pride in our state, and believes it takes
one road at a time to keep our great State clean and litter free.
Hanson does this by herself, for Texas, because she is dedicated to
keeping Texas beautiful now and for years to come.
In 2009, she picked up litter 27 times, with 96 bags of trash and
worked 65 hours. She picked up items, such as saw horses that fell
from a contractor’s truck and several bags of household trash. She has
also been recycling aluminum cans found on the roadway with proceeds
going to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Hanson has made a difference in Cass County. Not only does she pick up
litter on her adopted section of road, she also picks up on the
surrounding Farm to Market and county roads.
It is this sense of responsibility and dedication that resulted in
TxDOT awarding Hanson the 2010 Adopt-a-Highway volunteer award.
The Adopt-a-Highway Awards are presented each year to the state’s
outstanding volunteer group and TxDOT maintenance employee, nominated
by the department’s 25 district offices. Hanson’s award was presented
at the Keep Texas Beautiful annual conference in Austin on June 24.
The Adopt-a-Highway program began in Tyler, Texas in 1985, and
celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. Almost 4,500 groups have
adopted nearly 9,000 miles of Texas highways. From its roots in Texas,
the Adopt-a-Highway program has spread across the United States,
Canada, Great Britain, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Mexico.

the meeting and this is what he said, “We think it would be good for
the community as a whole. We’ve got a good school. We want to keep it

school and High School.
At yesterday’s Region C meeting held in Mt. Pleasant, the Region C
water study commission determined to go to Congress to hold a study of
the Sulphur River Basin before deciding to expand water sources, or to
create new ones. Several options have been weighed in to determine
what the best option is and Senator Florence Shapiro said,” the
biggest piece missing to have any conclusions has got to be the Suplur
River Basin Study. It always circles back around to that. It needs to
be done.” Several residents around the area spoke to challenge the
placing value on property that would be obtained for flooding.
Also at the meeting, it was determined that repairs made in 1999 were
still good. Bill Smith with the Army Corps of Engineers said
everything was fine with the inspection and that it should be another
decade before fishing is interrupted in the stilling basin to that
degree again. The next time they plan to drain the spillway will be in
the year 2020.

screen, at least SPF 15 or higher, use at least an ounce 30 minutes
before you get out in the sun and reapply it after you get out of the
pool or the lake or after you towel off and stuff. If you do burn and
you start peeling, you need to apply a non greasy moisturizer. You
need to contact your doctor if you start running a real high fever.
Children with burns watch for dehydration so give them plenty of
fluids and you can take a cool bath to help with the burn.” For more
information on sun burn prevention and treatment contact your doctor.

H 30 Nighttime Lane Closures Rescheduled for Friday
Due to inclement weather, lane closures have been rescheduled for
Friday night, June 10, for Interstate 30 and Richmond Road (FM 559) in
Texarkana as work crews pour the concrete bridge decking for the new
bridge structures over the interstate at the Richmond Road
interchange.
“The lane closures will involve all lanes of traffic and take place
between 9 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Saturday in order to impact traffic
less,” said Kenny Icenhower, area engineer for the Texas Department of
Transportation in Texarkana. “All detour routes will be signed
accordingly.”
The following is the schedule for lane closures and detour routes:
June 11 – All lanes of Interstate 30 and the Richmond Road overpasses
will be closed in Texarkana as work crews place concrete beams for new
bridges. Detour route: Westbound IH 30 traffic will be detoured at the
exit ramp in front of St. Michael's Medical Center and will travel the
frontage road all the way to the entrance ramp at FM 989. Eastbound IH
30 traffic will be detoured at the exit ramp just east of FM 989 and
will travel the frontage road to the entrance ramp just west of
Summerhill Road. Richmond Road traffic will be detoured down the
frontage roads on each side, but motorists are encouraged to use
alternate routes if possible. All intersections involved in the
detours will be worked by police officers.
“We ask that local motorists use extra caution driving in and around
the construction zones as other motorists unfamiliar with the area may
try to find alternate routes,” Icenhower said. “Closure schedules can
also change due to unexpected problems and adverse weather conditions,
but we will try to keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible.”

the Weather getting hotter, risks of fire increases
The Summer brings all sorts of activities such as barbeques and

Resource Specialist with Texas Wildfire Service tells us more,
“Actually with the low amounts to no rainfall we’ve received, timber
and grass field moistures are low and real dry. So what we’re asking
is people to be careful about burning their trash or any kind of brush

Queen City Names their new Athletic Director and First Assistant
Coach:
Last night the Queen City School Board held a special meeting and
hired a new Athletic Director and First Assistant Coach. Buddy
Ray will be the Athletic Director, head football and track
coach along with him, Fred Thrower will be the First Assistant
Coach and Offensive Cooridanator. KPYN spoke with Buddy Ray
and asked him about his plans for the upcoming year, " Well
first of all, I just feel excited. I think that this is
something I needed to reenergize my career and obviously Mr
Barnwell, having worked with us before, being able to bring
Coach Thrower back with me is exciting; but what we plan to
bring to Queen City is just that we're gonna try to treat the
kids as we'd want our own kids treated. We're gonna work them
hard. We're gonna help continue what Coach Warren has started,
certainly they're on the right track. We just want our young
men to be successful in everything they do, but we're gonna
bring an energy and excitement that we get ready to go."
Buddy Ray has been coaching for 29 years, comes from coaching
Dekalb the last 6 years, and replaces Brandon Warren, who
retired earlier this month. Fred Thrower has been coaching for
23 years and is from Cambden, Arkansas. KPYN asked
Superintendent Rob Barnwell how he felt about hiring the new
coaches and he said, "I'm very excited, of course, it's
unfortunate how Coach Warren had to step down. I've come
really close to him over the last couple of years, especially
the last year or so, but I feel real good about the program.
I've got two quality guys that's coming in together at the
same time, it's gonna be an exciting time. I think the coaches
that are here are gonna buy into the program and his
philosophies and I believe the kids will too. And I think
we're finally gonna have some stability here and that's what
we really need and positive thinking and I just feel real
good."
Coach Ray was scheduled to start July 1st, but due to the
importance of the month of June, he will be starting June 15
and.
Lane closures have been scheduled for five nights next week and one
night the following week for Interstate 30 and Richmond Road (FM 559)
in Texarkana as work crews work on the new bridge structures over the
interstate at the Richmond Road interchange. The closures are
scheduled for Tuesday through Saturday and the following Thursday
nights, June 1-5 and 10. “The lane closures will involve all lanes of
traffic and take place between 9 p.m. each night and 6 a.m. the next
morning in order to impact traffic less,” said Kenny Icenhower, area
engineer for the Texas Department of Transportation in Texarkana. “All
detour routes will be signed accordingly.”
The following is the schedule for lane closures and detour routes:
June 1-5 and 10 – All lanes of Interstate 30 and the Richmond Road
overpasses will be closed in Texarkana as work crews place concrete
beams for new bridges. Detour route: Westbound IH 30 traffic will be
detoured at the exit ramp in front of St. Michael's Medical Center and
will travel the frontage road all the way to the entrance ramp at FM
989. Eastbound IH 30 traffic will be detoured at the exit ramp just
east of FM 989 and will travel the frontage road to the entrance ramp
just west of Summerhill Road. Richmond Road traffic will be detoured
down the frontage roads on each side, but motorists are encouraged to
use alternate routes if possible. All intersections involved in the
detours will be worked by police officers.
In additional work, during the night of Tuesday, June 1, the turn lane
will be removed on the Summerhill Road (SH 93) overpass crossing IH
30. This will be similar to the traffic pattern change on Richmond
Road in January in preparation for replacing the structures.

Cook spoke at local schools and community events to encourage students
and parents not to litter, and distributed litterbags to promote
litter prevention. She also spoke to multiple civic organizations
about litter solutions, which motivated the Atlanta Lions Club to join
TxDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway program.
“I never realized how bad the litter problem was until I looked at the
facts, and I wanted to make others aware too,” Cook said. “I enjoyed
being able to tell people about litter and how they can help prevent
it.”
Cook plans to attend Stephen F. Austin State University and major in
hospitality administration. She wants to continue her environmental
efforts on the university’s campus.
“I want to join service organizations and leadership organizations,
like student government,” Cook said. “I still have extra litterbags
that I will pass out, too.”

IH 30 Lane Closures
Scheduled for Thursday Night
Lane closures are scheduled Thursday night for the eastbound
and westbound lanes of Interstate 30 in Texarkana as work
crews pour concrete decking for new bridges over the
interstate at the US 59 interchange.
“The lane closures will take place between 9 p.m. Thursday and
6 a.m. Friday in order to impact traffic less,” said Kenny
Icenhower, area engineer for the Texas Department of
Transportation in Texarkana. “All detour routes will be signed
accordingly.”
The following is the schedule for lane closures and detour
routes:
Thursday, May 13 – Both directions of traffic could be closed
for pouring concrete decking. Detour route: Eastbound traffic
will be detoured off I-30 at the US 59 exit just past Kings
Highway (FM 989) and be routed down the frontage road to the
turn-around under the overpass at New Boston Road and enter
onto US 59 North to back I-30 eastbound. Westbound traffic
will detoured off I-30 at the US 59 exit just past Richmond
Road (FM 559) and travel down the frontage road to Kings
Highway and then back onto I-30. Police officers and flagmen
will be at the intersection to help direct traffic back onto
I-30.
“We ask that local motorists use extra caution driving in and
around the construction zones as other motorists unfamiliar
with the area may try to find alternate routes,” Icenhower
said. “Closure schedules can also change due to unexpected
problems and adverse weather conditions, but we will try to
keep traffic moving as efficiently as possible.”
Anyone having any questions about the lane closures, detour
routes or construction work can call 903-838-8574 for more
information.

TxDOT Kicks Off
Annual Click It or Ticket Campaign
Safety Belts for Back Seat Passengers and Booster Seats for
Children Now Required
AUSTIN - The Texas Department of Transportation’s 9th annual
Click It or Ticket spring campaign kicks off this week with a
warning to drivers and passengers to fasten their safety belts
or expect to get a ticket.
Transportation officials say state laws enacted in 2009 could
result in more citations this year if drivers and passengers
fail to heed new safety belt requirements. For the first time,
all passengers in the back seat now must be buckled up, and
children younger than 8 years old have to ride in a child
safety seat or booster seat unless they are taller than 4 feet
9 inches. Fines range from $25 to $250 plus court costs.
“Whether you’re the driver or a passenger in the front or back
seat, every adult and every child in the vehicle must be
properly restrained,” said Carol Rawson, TxDOT’s Traffic
Operations Division Director. “Buckling up can not only save
you from getting an expensive ticket, it can also save your
life.”
Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for those
between four and 44 years of age. Last year in Texas, more
than 3,400 people died in fatal collisions on Texas streets
and highways. In 2008, half of all pickup truck drivers killed
in traffic crashes were not buckled up. Wearing a safety belt
increases the odds of surviving a crash by more than 50
percent, and in pickups, that number increases to 80 percent.
To ensure that Texans are complying with state law surrounding
safety belt and booster seat use, thousands of state troopers
will join police officers and sheriffs’ deputies statewide to
step up enforcement of the state’s safety belt laws between
May 24 and June 6, including the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
Since the Click It or Ticket campaign began in 2002, the
state’s safety belt use rate has increased from 76 percent to
almost 93 percent. Safety experts estimate the rise in the
numbers of motorists who now buckle up has resulted in 2,400
fewer traffic fatalities and prevented more than 56,300
injuries. According to the Texas Transportation Institute,
motorists least likely to buckle up continue to include men,
teenage boys and pickup drivers and passengers. Visit
www.texasclickitorticket.com for details.
