NEW BOSTON, TX-On paper, you would think that
the 25th ranked 3-A team in the state, the New
Boston Lions would have no trouble beating the 51st
ranked 2-A Linden-Kildare Tigers. After all, the Lions were at
home and L-K was a 13-point underdog.
The Lions raced to a 19-point half time lead
and it appeared the game would play to form, but you can’t
underestimate Jerry Bennett’s Tigers who scored 14 second half
points and the New Boston Lions (3-1) barley held on to
beat Linden-Kildare 19-14.
Kenneth Harrison scored both Linden-Kildare
(2-3) touchdowns with a 1-yard and 5-yard run.
Greg Gaston led all rushers with 105 yards on
16 carries.
9/11/09
LINDEN, TX- The Linden-Kildare Tigers (1-2)

four quarters in a football game as the Linden-Kildare Tigers
stomped Harleton 40-21 in front of a soaked Jack Hetherington
Tiger Stadium crowed who weathered a lengthily weather delay
before finally tasting the thrill of victory.
The Tigers offence was led by running backs
RaShoderick Linwood and Greg Gaston who each ran for two
touchdowns. Gaston’s touchdown scampers were from 1 and 24
yards while Linwood’s were from 28 and 40 yards. Gaston
finished with 150 yards on the ground and Linwood with
eighty-nine.

L-K wins final
scrimmage and gets ready for Friday season opener
The Linden-Kildare Tigers football team scrimmaged at DeKalb
last Thursday night and it was all L-K as the Tigers routed
the Bears 6 scores to one. It’s obvious that the spread
offense at L-K is working as the Tigers were able to score at
will without star wide-out Colton Watson who sat the scrimmage
out with a20sore ankle. Watson will start in the season opener
this Friday when the Tigers host Clarksville at Jack
Hetherington Tiger Stadium in Linden. You can listen to the
game live on the internet at
www.kpyn.net and replayed on KPYN AM and FM Saturday
morning at Nine-Thirty.
You can also listen to the Coach Bennett program every Tuesday
morning at 10 a.m. on KPYN AM-FM and
www.kpyn.net beginning this Tuesday morning August 26th,
2009.
“I think that offensively we’re ahead of the defense,”
Linden-Kildare Tigers head coach Jerry Bennett said. “Ha, ha,
that’s kind of interesting.”
Despite only giving up one score to DeKalb, Coach Bennett was
not happy with his defenses play in the scrimmage.
“They (DeKalb) are not as good this year. But I did not think
that we were good on defense but I’m not going to gripe. I’m
happy. Colton Watson didn’t play and that hurt us on defense,
he would have made some of the tackles on their runs around
end.
Coach Bennett watched Clarksville scrimmage and he said that
they’re a lot like they were last season.
“They got speed, their quarterback is quick and they have some
questions in their offensive line and they didn’t have a lot
of kids come out but they’ll be a good opponent for us,”
Bennett said.
Coach Bennett said that he thinks that Clarksville believes
that they can run the ball on his Tigers.
“I
think that they think that they’re going to have to play good
defense against us,” Bennett said. Bennett also said that he
thinks that they can out score Clarksville with their highly
potent spread offense.
Pre Season Preview by Robert Del Giorno
The
Linden-Kildare Tigers are going into the 2009 season better
and older according to their second year head coach Jerry
Bennett and Coach Bennett says that they’re poised and ready
to challenge Daingerfield and Jefferson, the two teams to beat
according to the ole ball coach, for the District 17 2-A
title this year.
“Were better, I think that’s obvious,” Bennett said. “The kids
know what we want and that’s going to help out.”
According to Bennett, the players to watch on offence are
obviously junior quarterback Kenny Harrison (5-11, 170, 4.6),
senior running back Greg Gaston (5-8, 220, 4.6) and senior
wide receiver Colton Watson (5-9, 170, 4.5). L-K will run the
spread offense and their new offensive coordinator this year
is Derek Simmons. Simmons was the offensive coordinator for
the Atlanta Rabbit’s football team that won the state
championship.
Defensively the Tigers will run out of the 4-3 with a new
defensive coordinator, last year’s secondary coach Mike Berry.
Players on defense that Coach Bennett said are leaders are
junior Cody Beleu (5-11, 165, 4.7) and Sanwon Bennett, no
relation to the coach. Obviously, Gaston at linebacker and
Watson at defensive back are also leaders on the defensive
side of the ball. However, the player that Coach Bennett calls
the premier player and someone who is new and who has improved
over the off season is sophomore center and defensive end D.J.
Dawson (5-11, 191).
“He’s (Dawson) worked extremely hard in the summer and off
season to get better,” Coach Bennett said.
Watson will punt, kick field goals and extra points for the
Tigers this year and LaShodrick Linwood will kick off. Watson
and Linwood will also return the punts and kickoffs.
The
Tigers had their first scrimmage last Saturday (August 15th,
2009) at Jack Hetherington Tiger Stadium in Linden against the
Pleasant Grove Hawks and even though the Tigers 2nd
and 3rd strings couldn’t match up against a deep
roster of 3-A Hawks, the L-K first string matched the PG first
string 2 scores to 2 scores.
“Offensively we were a lot better but we gave up a couple of
big pass plays with blown coverage’s,” Coach Bennett said.
In
the scrimmage, Colton Watson suffered a minor ankle injury and
he will probably be out for the Tigers final scrimmage this
Thursday night at DeKalb but Coach Bennett felt like he’d be
ready for the pre-district season opener against Clarksville.
In
the scrimmage against PG, Coach Bennett told KPYN that he was
most impressed defensively with the play of Gaston, Devonte
Greenleaf, and Nigel Brown.
Bennett thought that Harrison did well offensively and
receiver sophomore Quantavious Warren did a good job.
“I
think that our offensive played better too. I thought that
they did a good job,” Bennett said.
Can
L-K beat Dangerfield this year?
“I
think that we’ve got a chance,” Bennett said. I think we
played them hard last year until we let them run the kick-off
back and I think that we’re a lot better this year.
The
Tigers scrimmage at DeKalb will get underway Thursday at 5
p.m. with the JV and be followed by the varsity and the Tigers
first game is Friday August 28th at Clarksville.
In
the scrimmage against DeKalb, Coach Bennett said that his
Tigers will begin preparing for Clarksville.
You
